With ever more realistic games, the big studios are looking for increased immersion for players. If we add virtual reality to this, everything seems to be done to transport the player to the very heart of the game. Almost everything, because if visual immersion is only progressing, immersion in terms of interactions remains it quite archaic, with simple dialogues and choice of texts. But Amazon intends to change the game with Alexa Game Control, a voice control system allowing interactions within video games.

It was during the Gamescom opening conference, an event covered by our colleagues from Gamekult, that Amazon’s collaboration with the Deep Silver studio on the development of Dead Island 2. the survival of zombies, which will be released on February 3, 2023, will be the first game to welcome this new technology, which is intended to be accessible to all. Indeed the American giant specified in its press release that “gamers don’t need an Echo device to play games with their voice; they can use any microphone or headset connected to their PC or console.Michael Poulter, spokesperson for Amazon, also clarified to The Verge that to have access to Alexa Game Control, you would have to play while connected to the Internet, and that a simple Amazon account was necessary, even without a Prime subscription.

Being able to speak out loud in front of your game will provide additional immersion in Dead Island 2 since it will be possible to communicate directly with the NPCs (non-player characters, editor’s note) of the game, or even to change weapons on simple request. “Players will enjoy a more immersive gameplay experience by using their voice to goad zombies, call for help, activate special abilities during battle, and more, without having to say “Alexa,” use a Echo device or purchase special equipment“, declares in the press release Steve Bernstein, the director of Alexa Games. Because unlike the Echo device, no keyword like “Alexa” will be necessary to trigger these voice commands.

At launch, the Alexa Game Control will be available in English in North America, so you’ll have to be patient before the system appears in other languages and countries. Also note that the new feature will only be available on PC or Xbox. However, Michael Poulter told The Verge that “our vision is to be available wherever games are played”, which leaves a hope to see Alexa Game Control on PS5 or Nintendo Switch.
