The European Council welcomes the entry into force of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the EU and the United Kingdom

The European Council welcomed theentry into force on 1er May 2021, of the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement. President Michel said that this agreement together with the Withdrawal Agreement and its protocols constitute the framework for relations between the EU and the United Kingdom and that these two agreements should be fully and effectively implemented.

In this respect, the European Council also invited the European Commission to continue its efforts to ensure the full implementation of the agreements, in particular in the areas of EU citizens’ rights, fisheries and a level playing field of competition.
