Microsoft is running ads for Microsoft 365 users moving to Office 2021, offering discounts for Microsoft 365 Family plan subscriptions.
Microsoft Azure Security Principal Security Architect Lee Holmes also shared a screenshot showing the advertisement displayed as an alert bar under the Office menu. According to Computer Report that beepseveral users reported seeing these ads from August 10th.

The screenshot clearly shows that Microsoft marked this ad as a “limited offer” allowing users to get “90 days of Microsoft 365 Family plan for just $0.99”. And what’s interesting is that Microsoft uses differently worded buttons, enticing users to click the button for big subscription discounts.
Other Office users saw a slightly different ad saying “For just $0.99, get 90 days of Microsoft 365 Family Plan and share with up to five people, terms apply.”
Microsoft isn’t the first time to show promotional ads in Office apps or other Windows apps. Two years ago, the company also ran promotional ads in the menu bar of the Windows 10 Wordpad app. Microsoft also displayed ads in Windows 11’s File Explorer, although it later called them simply “an experiment.”
