Epsilor batteries equip Israel’s first quantum communications nanosatellite. – IsraelValley

The nanosatellite recently launched by Tel Aviv University (TAU) uses a tiny lithium-ion rechargeable battery developed by Epsilor, a globally recognized developer and manufacturer of mobile power products for defense and aerospace applications and based in Bet Shemesh.

This satellite, the TAU-SAT3 was launched aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 launch vehicle from the Cape Canaveral space station in Florida in mid-January and it will demonstrate optical and quantum communication from space via nanosatellites.

It is equipped with an optical device only a few centimeters long and was powered by the Epsilor battery developed specifically for this mission. This battery will provide energy to the nanosatellite for its entire life in orbit.

In simulations, Epsilor’s battery demonstrated a generous lifespan of at least 10 years of operation in low Earth orbit without the need to balance electronics. It has been specifically designed to meet difficult spatial conditions within a size limit of 8 cm by 8 cm by 3 cm.

The Li-ion battery developed by Epsilor has undergone an extensive validation process during which it has been tested under conditions similar to those existing in space. The battery had to meet the highest standards of cleanliness, minimal outgassing and reliability.

The battery, which was developed with the support of the Israel Innovation Authority, meets strict size and weight constraints, offers high power density and complies with the strictest safety requirements.
