After Amazon, Meta and Microsoft, Google cuts thousands of jobs worldwide

Law of the series or real underlying trend? After Amazon, Meta and Microsoft, the parent company of Google – Alphabet – announced on Friday January 20 the elimination of 12,000 jobs worldwide. In total, this concerns approximately 6% of the company’s total workforce. Alphabet had nearly 187,000 employees worldwide at the end of September 2022.

“Over the past two years, we have experienced periods of spectacular growth”said Sundar Pichai, boss of Alphabet in an email sent to employees of the group. “To support and fuel this growth, we have hired in a different economic context than the one we know today”he added, adding that the economic situation forced the company to reduce its workforce.

According to Alphabet’s CEO, “all departments, functions, levels of responsibility and regions” will be affected by these job cuts. The American employees concerned have already been notified. In other countries, the procedure will take longer depending on local labor laws.
